What Are E-Bike Batteries?
E-bike batteries are high-capacity (i.e., high-watt hour) lithium-ion battery packs designed for electric bicycles. Because they store more energy than everyday household batteries, they’re considered a type of Medium-Format battery and need careful handling when they’re ready for recycling.
Common Uses:
These battery packs are found in Electric bicycles, including:
- E-cargo bikes
- E-mountain bikes
- E-commuter bikes
- E-road bikes
Why Recycling Matters
Because of their high energy density, e-bike batteries can pose fire risks when damaged or improperly disposed of. Recycling keeps communities safe and supports the recovery of valuable materials.
How to Recycle
E-Bike Batteries
E-Bike batteries are recycled through The Battery Network’s dedicated program, created in collaboration with bicycle industry leaders to offer riders a safe and compliant disposal solution.
- Use the locator to find a trained collection site that accepts e-bike batteries from participating brands.
- The Battery Network and certified partners manage transport and recycling to ensure safe, responsible processing.
If the battery is damaged (swollen, leaking, or overheating), follow the Damaged Battery instructions.
Important to Know
- Never attempt to modify, open, or disassemble an e-bike battery.
- Don’t continue using an e-bike battery that’s not performing normally.
- Only certain e-bike battery brands are accepted because the program is a voluntary industry partnership, so it currently covers the manufacturers who’ve opted in to ensure their batteries are recycled safely and kept out of landfills. Learn more about the program.
