Battery recycling works. You can help.

What Are High Energy Batteries?

High-energy batteries are rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs used in outdoor power equipment, built to deliver high power and long runtimes. They store more energy than everyday household batteries and are considered a type of Medium-Format battery. Because of their size and energy capacity, they need safe handling when they’re ready for recycling.

Common Uses:

High-energy batteries are used in electric, cordless outdoor power equipment such as:

  • Lawn mowers
  • Snow blowers
  • Leaf blowers
  • Chainsaws

Why Recycling Matters

High-energy batteries (i.e., batteries over 300 watt hours) can still hold a charge even when they stop working. If they’re thrown in the trash or left loose with other batteries, they can spark and create a fire risk. Recycling keeps homes and communities safer and helps recover valuable materials that can be reused.

How to Recycle
High Energy Batteries

High-energy batteries are recycled through The Battery Network’s dedicated program, created in collaboration with outdoor power equipment industry leaders, because they’re larger and store more power than most household batteries.

  • Use the locator to find a trained collection site that accepts high-energy batteries from participating brands.
  • The Battery Network and certified partners manage transport and recycling to ensure safe, responsible processing.

If the battery is damaged (swollen, leaking, overheating, or recalled), follow the Damaged Battery/DDR instructions instead.

Safety Reminders:

  • Never put high-energy batteries in the trash or curbside recycling.
  • Do not disassemble or attempt to repair the battery pack.
