Supporting safe, convenient battery recycling across Washington
Washington’s battery stewardship law will establish a statewide system that will make it easy for residents to recycle household batteries safely and responsibly. The Battery Network partners with retailers, household hazardous waste and solid waste agencies, and producers to keep batteries out of the waste stream and protect communities across Washington.

More About the Law
In May 2023, Washington Governor Jay Inslee signed SB 5144, creating the state’s battery stewardship law (Chapter 70A.555 RCW). The law requires battery producers to fund and operate a program that provides convenient, free collection and recycling of covered portable and medium format batteries across Washington. The Battery Network will submit its stewardship plan to the Washington Department of Ecology by the July 1 deadline, covering the more than 250 producers currently participating in the program. As a result, producers already participating in The Battery Network program will automatically be included in the Connecticut plan and do not need to take any additional action at this time.
