What Are Medium-Format Batteries?
Medium-format batteries are mid-size rechargeable, lithium-ion batteries that hold more energy than everyday household batteries but are smaller than full EV battery packs. They require careful handling during recycling.
Common Uses:
Medium-Format batteries are found in:
- Electric, cordless lawn mower
- Electric, cordless snowblower
- E-Bikes
- Mobility scooters
- Marine motors
- UPS backup systems
- Portable generators
Why Recycling Matters
These batteries store a significant amount of energy and can spark if improperly disposed of. Recycling protects against fire risks and recovers valuable materials.
How to Recycle
Medium-Format Batteries
Medium-format batteries aren’t accepted everywhere, and the safest drop-off option depends on where you live.
- Contact your local household hazardous waste (HHW) facility for instructions on where to take the battery.
- If you’re in Vermont or Illinois, you may have additional drop-off options nearby. Use the Vermont drop-off locator or the Illinois drop-off locator to find a participating site close to you.
Keep in Mind:
- Not all drop-off locations accept medium-format batteries; always check ahead.
- These batteries should never be placed in household trash.
