High Energy Program

Recycling high-energy batteries safely and easily.

More and more products now run on powerful rechargeable batteries. Many larger products, from lawn mowers to snow blowers and leaf blowers, use high energy batteries (i.e., batteries over 300 watt hours). As these batteries reach end-of-life, what happens next matters for people, property, and the environment.

That’s why The Battery Network, in collaboration with the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) and the Power Tool Institute (PTI), designed a program to facilitate the safe collection and responsible recycling of high energy batteries used in these industry products.

For Manufacturers & Brand Owners

High energy batteries don’t stop mattering once a product is sold. Joining the High Energy Battery Recycling program helps you:

  • Offer a clear, compliant end-of-life path for your batteries
  • Demonstrate safety and environmental stewardship in action
  • Support a network of trained collection sites that serve your customers
  • Rely on The Battery Network’s expertise in safety, logistics, and recycling

Through manufacturers’ participation in this program, we are able to provide specialized recycling kits, compliant transportation and logistics, safety resources, and consumer education.

Participating Brands

Participating brands help make this program possible. Their support covers the costs of collection, safe shipping, and recycling, which is why we can only accept batteries from participating brands.

For Retailers & Collection Sites

Make your location a trusted high energy battery drop-off point by participating in our high energy battery recycling program. It’s good for you, your customers, and the environment.

As a retailer of a participating brand, you may be eligible to register your location as a collection site at no cost. Once enrolled, your site will appear on The Battery Network on drop-off locator so customers can easily find where to bring their high energy batteries (from participating brands) for recycling.

Eligibility
Unless you are a previously approved retailer, only locations in the following states are eligible to register and participate in this program for free: CA, MN, NY, and WA. If you are an independent retailer who sells a participating brand outside of one of these 4 states, email [email protected] for a paid solution.
As an enrolled collection site, you receive:

  • Required online training on safe handling and packaging
  • Recycling kits for end-of-life and damaged/defective high energy batteries
  • Clear safety guidelines, shipping preparation instructions, and support
  • Coordinated collection, transportation, and recycling managed by The Battery Network

Looking to recycle your high energy battery?

If you have a high energy battery (>300 watt hours) from an outdoor power equipment brand that participates in our program, you can bring it to a designated drop-off site for safe recycling.

Today, the program exclusively accepts:

  • High energy batteries over 300 watt hours, AND
  • From participating outdoor power equipment and power tool brands

Battery recycling keeps your home and community safe. To prepare your battery:

  • Follow any safety guidance from your product manufacturer
  • Do not disassemble or attempt to repair the battery yourself
  • If the battery appears damaged, swollen, or is not functioning properly, handle it with care and follow site or manufacturer instructions before transport

Safety at every step

High energy batteries require careful handling. That’s why our program is built around safety:

  • Trained collection sites follow clear charging, storage, and transport guidelines
  • Tailored packaging and shipping practices help reduce the risk of incidents in transit
  • Only trained, approved partners handle and process collected batteries

Safe battery recycling starts with you. From there, The Battery Network and our partners take it the rest of the way.
